The Centre For Personal Enhancement Opens Independent Dental Hygiene Clinic

November 19, 2007

Access to affordable dental hygiene services in Owen Sound has just improved with the opening of the region’s first independent dental hygiene clinic. The clinic is operated by Janice McFadden, Registered Dental Hygienist, who has recently been authorized by the Ontario College of Dental Hygienists to self initiate dental hygiene treatments. The clinic is an expansion of the Luminesse Teeth Whitening Clinic located at the Centre for Personal Enhancement at 250 10th St East.

According to research statistics, six million people in Ontario do not see a dentist for a variety of reasons including cost, illness, age, or low income. They also might live in remote areas or be residents in long-term care homes or be physically unable to travel to a traditional dental office.

In the past, the only way to access preventative dental care, such as regular teeth cleanings from a dental hygienist, was through a dentist. As of September 1st.  2007, the McGuinty government fulfilled its 2003 election promise to improve access of Ontarians to preventative oral care services and now, through Bill 171, dental hygienists have the freedom to clean teeth without a procedural "order" from a dentist.

Dental hygienists are regulated by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) which ensures competent, safe, dental hygiene care for the public. The CDHO strongly supports the legislation that also permits hygienists to "provide services to the public in long-term care facilities, private clinics, community health centres and rural and remote areas."

Janice McFadden, RDH, comments, "During these past 4 years of operating a teeth whitening clinic, I've seen many people whose oral health was suffering because they didn't have access to a dentist and I wasn't able to provide my hygiene services because of the previous restrictions. That was very frustrating for me. I am glad now to be able to offer more."
