Eyebrow and Eyelash Tinting at Home [Complete DIY Guide]

eyebrow and eyelash tinting at home

Looking for a quick “pick-me-up” that gives you a bold and beautiful look? It’s no secret that groomed, shaped and darker brows frame and accentuate your facial features. If you aren’t heading to a salon or spa anytime soon, consider having your eyebrows and eyelashes tinted for a more youthful and sexy appearance.

The added bonus? You get a few extra minutes of “shut eye” in the morning with a simplified makeup routine!

The History, YES, of Eyelash and Eyebrow Tinting

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of eyebrow and eyelash dyeing, let’s just marvel at how long this practice has been going on! The ancient Egyptians used “kohl” or ground lead sulphide, South Asians used “kajal” or ground ash mixed with astor oil and Europeans used sulfuric acid, saffron and even the soot of fireplaces to colour eyelashes.

Is it any wonder why it’s still a practice today?

Why do Some People tint Eyebrows & Eyelashes?

Often fair-haired people or those with thinning or barely visible brows and lashes, tint their eyebrows and eyelashes to darken these features as well as add more definition and thickness to them. This makes them look younger, refreshed, and brightens the face.

How much does it cost to tint eyebrows and eyelashes?

The price to tint eyebrows and eyelashes will vary depending on whether you have it done at a salon or you do it yourself using an at-home kit.

When done in a professional setting in a spa or salon, the price range for eyebrow and eyelash tints cost between $30-$45.

DIY kits can be purchased at beauty supply stores and outlets as well as from various online stores and drugstores. The cost ranges from $15-70 CAD with some kits having enough product for multiple applications.

What is DIY Eyebrow & Eyelash Tinting?

Do-it-yourself (DIY) eyebrow and eyelash tinting refers to doing the procedures at home, by yourself, or with the help of a trusted friend. Usually, it takes about 30 minutes from start to finish with the help of an at-home eyebrow or eyelash dye kit.

Can I tint Eyebrows and Eyelashes at Home?

Yes, you can tint eyebrows and eyelashes at home. This is done with a kit that you can buy at various beauty retailers including drugstores as well as online stores. When you dye your eyelashes or eyebrows at home or in a salon, the results will last about 4-6 weeks. However, it is only safe if you know how to do it properly.

RefectoCil Eyelash and Eyebrow Tint

The most popular tint is blue/black, but those with blonde hair may opt for a brown shade. This tint is recommended by professionals too. The DIY eyelash tint lengthens short lashes, and the eyebrow tint adds a nice shine to the hairs.

What are the risks of a DIY eyelash or eyebrow tint?

It’s always important to understand any issues or risks that there may be when you dye eyelashes at home, or eyebrows at home. It’s important to follow the directions properly and avoid getting any of the dye in your eyes. The product could irritate your eyes, cause itching and/or burning as well as an allergic reaction. To avoid the complications of an allergic reaction, it is important to do a patch test, similar to what you would do for at-home hair dye.

If you don’t properly protect the skin around your eyebrows and eyelashes, you may end up dyeing the skin around them as well.

How to dye eyelashes at home?

  • CLEANSE

Wash your eyes and ensure there is no makeup on your eyelashes. You can use your regular facial cleanser to do this.

  • PROTECT

Apply a thin coat of Vaseline or petroleum jelly to your upper and lower eyelids making sure that there is no Vaseline on the lashes. This will prevent staining of the skin.

  • MIX & APPLY

Mix the tint as per the instructions. To apply the dye, start with your top lashes and using a cotton swab, brush the tint downwards from your lash line to the tip of your lashes and then do the same on the underside of the lashes. Then, repeat the same on your bottom eyelashes. Be cautious of the waterline and avoid getting any dye in your eyes.

  • SITTING TIME

Let the dye sit on your lashes for the recommended time – usually 10 minutes. However, if your eyes are stinging or burning, wash them immediately. (If you need to reapply it again, you can.)

  • RINSE/CLEANSE

Wash the tint off using wet cotton pads. If the tint is on the skin, wipe it away with the wet cotton.

  • CLEANSE

Use your facial cleanser to wash the brow area well

  • PROTECT

Apply a thin film of petroleum jelly to the area above and below the brow (not the brow) so that your skin will not be stained accidentally.

  • MIX & APPLY

Mix the dye as recommended by the manufacturer and exactly, as directed. Apply it with a cotton swab or if you prefer, a thin brush. The key is to apply it as precisely as possible. If you have any areas that are dripping or have applied it in an area that you don’t want to tint, use a clean cotton swab to quickly clean it up.

  • SITTING TIME

Follow the directions and allow the dye to sit for the recommended amount of time. (Usually, 5-10 minutes but this may vary.)

  • CLEANSE

Wash the dye and Vaseline off after the appropriate time with your facial cleanser.

Now that you’ve got the lowdown on brow and lash tinting, you can find the option that works best for you. And, if it’s too much hassle to do-it-yourself, don’t worry because it’s easy enough to find a salon or spa near you!

And in case you’re completely invested in your eyebrows and eyelashes, check out the other treatments that will complement your new look and keep it looking its best.

  • Eyebrow threading or waxing to help create and maintain a beautiful shapely brow.
  • Micro feathering or microblading which is like tattooing in hair where it may be sparse in the brow area.
  • Eyebrow lamination which is a specific grooming technique that creates a thicker and fuller look.
  • Powder brows is a technique similar to microblading, but gives you a look that you would get if you filled your brows in with a shadow
  • Eyebrow and/or eyelash extensions are also a complementary procedure that can lengthen your brows and lashes if they lack density. Extensions are glued to the skin at your brow or lash lines.
  • Lash lifts are “perms” for your lashes that curl the lashes from the base (lash line) so they extend their full length.
