Generally, a mole (naevus) is a cluster of pigment-producing cells. They usually look like small, dark bumps on your skin. The majority of moles are benign (harmless) but some can develop into cancerous lesions. If you have any concerns, it is always best to see a doctor to have your moles checked.

Procedure & Recovery

The area of the mole or skin lesion is anesthetized using local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. The doctor then uses a small biopsy shave blade to simply shave the lesion off, flush with the surrounding skin. This method is quick and easy. The wound will heal well within a couple of weeks and is in the same footprint of the lesion removed. There is minimal scarring or stitches. The wound will typically heal flat and appear as if the lesion has been erased from the skin.

This method may be combined with the use of CO2 laser to optimize smoothness of results. Alternatively, the lesion is excised which results in a more complete removal and requires a deeper incision through the skin. As a result of the deeper incision, stitches will be required and there may be some scarring. This is the preferred method for moles with hairs. Your doctor may suggest that you use a special ointment to decrease the healing time and minimize the appearance of the scar.
