All You Need to Know About Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is also known as augmentation mammoplasty, but more commonly as breast enlargement surgery or a “boob job”. During this surgery, breast implants are placed under the chest muscles or tissues of the breast to give the breast a fuller appearance.

Breast surgery can be divided into 3 categories: breast augmentation, breast reduction or breast reconstruction.

The price of breast enlargement surgery in Canada can be $8000 or more. This will depend on the surgeon, the facility cost, the type of implant being used, and other procedure will be combined with the augmentation. The cost and type of surgery as well as materials will be discussed with you during your initial consultation.

The average cost of a “boob job” is approximately $8000 or more. Costs will be outlined for you at your initial consultation.

There are various options for breast augmentation with respect to type of implants. Most commonly, implants are either filled with saline or a silicone gel. There is also the option of having a fat-transfer implant for those who want a small increase their breast size.

The best implant size, shape and profile is the one that will make you feel comfortable, confident and that will help you achieve your cosmetic goals. You will have the opportunity to discuss your needs and options with your surgeon at your initial consultation.

The best breast implant filler will depend on the “look” you are trying to achieve. Some implants look more natural than others. Some implants have fillers that are more natural. Some women opt for saline implants because the risk of complications is lower if the implant were to rupture as the fluid filling from the implant can be resorbed by the body. Again, this will be discussed with you at your initial consultation.

Silicone breast implants are implants that have a silicone gel-based filling to maintain their structure.

Saline breast implants are implants that are filled with sterile saline (salt water) to give them their fullness and shape. If the implant were to rupture, the saline would be absorbed and eliminated naturally by your body.

Breast enlargement surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make an incision in the breast tissue and create a “pocket” to insert the breast implant behind the nipple. The pocket is between the breast tissue and the muscle tissue of your chest (pectoral muscle).

Yes, breast augmentation may be combined with other procedures, and this can be discussed with your surgeon at the initial consultation. However, it should be noted that adding additional procedures will alter your recovery time.

Full recovery usually takes 4-6 weeks for breast augmentation surgery.

It is very normal for clients to experience some tightness after breast enlargement surgery, but it is temporary and occurs while the breasts are adjusting to the implants. After about a week, clients can start a specific breast massage technique which softens the tissue around the implants. Within 2 weeks, the tightness begins to dissipate.

As with any surgery, you will feel discomfort in the region. Typically, the tightness or pulling sensation in the breast area will last for about 2-3 weeks. For the first few days, you may require pain medication that your surgeon will prescribe for you.

It is best not to touch or manipulate the breast for approximately 6 weeks after surgery. The implants take about this long to set and physical movement or manipulation may result in the displacement of the implant.

After breast implant surgery, it is normal to experience some tightness which is related to muscle spasms and swelling. To minimize the spasms of the chest wall, massaging the back can help as they relax the chest muscles that cover the implants.

To avoid putting pressure on the breast implants or on the incisions, do not sleep on your side for at least 2 weeks. It is recommended that you wait at least 4 weeks before you sleep on your stomach.

Lifting heavy objects after breast implant surgery and before you have recovered fully can create strain on the surgical incisions as well as the implants. As mentioned above, the implants need to time to set so any strain may potentially displace the implant.

Do not drive for at least 1 week after you’ve had breast enlargement surgery.

You should wait 4-6 weeks before swimming after having breast implants placed. This waiting period will allow the incisions to heal and the implants to set. Any overexertion of the chest muscles could adversely affect the incisions and lead to complications.

You should wait until you have been cleared by your surgeon before working out again. However, typically, most clients will resume their exercise regime 4-6 weeks after surgery.

While it is best to avoid any alcohol for at least 24 hours after your surgery, ideally, it is recommended that you wait for 2 weeks after breast augmentation to drink. This will help to decrease the risk of developing any post-operative complications you may develop.

This varies from client to client, but it usually takes about 3 months for the feeling to come back. In some cases, numbness may take longer to resolve as the breast tissue has several small nerves that can be damaged during breast augmentation surgery and the damaged area takes longer to repair.

Breast implants have longevity and can last up to 20 years; however, it is likely that, at some point, they may need to be replaced. Every individual is different and the way in which they take care of their implants is also a factor that can affect how long the implants last.

The surgical procedure itself is about 1-1.5 hours long. However, the procedure may take longer if other surgical procedures are combined with the breast augmentation.

There is no age at which you should or should not have breast augmentation surgery. However, there are important factors that must be considered including the physical development and emotional maturity of the client, motivation for surgery, expectations, and physical health. The age of the client may determine the type of implant that is placed as saline and silicone implants are approved for those 18 and 22 years of age, respectively.

To improve the perkiness or sagginess of breasts, a breast lift is performed. Breast augmentation will change the size or volume of the breasts.

The two are interrelated. Breast augmentation or enlargement surgery most often involves the placement of breast implants.

All the breast augmentation options are safe. However, the best option for breast enlargement surgery will be discussed at the initial consultation and depends on an individual’s preferences, health and cosmetic goals.

After breast augmentation surgery, there will be some soreness, swelling and discomfort due to a “stretching” or “tight” feeling which can last up to 3 weeks. For the first week or so, pain medication may be required and will be prescribed for you by your surgeon.

Immediately after implant placement, the breasts may seem smaller than expected and be high and elevated. As the muscles and tissues in the area relax, the implants will “drop” and look more natural. This may take up to 6 weeks.

Temporarily, the appearance of the nipple may change to look a little puffier or they may stretch to look a little bigger because of the bigger breast volume. However, as swelling subsides, the nipple will return to its original size and shape.

Before deciding to have breast enlargement surgery, there are several factors you may want to consider. While implants are most commonly used to enlarge the breasts, grafting fat tissue from other parts of your body may also be an option depending on how much of an increase in size you want. You will need to make decisions about the location of the incision, location of the implants and size and type of breast implants that are to be used. It is also important to know that after implant surgery, at times, the ability to breastfeed may be impacted depending on the location of the surgical incision and placement of the implants. This surgery will not correct sagging breasts.

After any surgery, it’s essential that you take care of yourself and give yourself time to heal and recover. Rest whenever you feel tired and follow your surgeon’s instructions. Strenuous activity of any kind and lifting should be avoided for 2-3 weeks. Eat a well-balanced diet and stay hydrated. It is not uncommon to be constipated right after surgery so you may need a laxative or stool softener to help you have a bowel movement, so you are not straining. Follow the specific care your surgeon has given you for the incision and/or drains and keep the area clean and dry. For the first 3 days, you can apply a cold pack to your breast for about 10-20 minutes every 2 hours to reduce swelling. Your doctor will also let you know when you can resume your medications and take any pain medication that has been prescribed as per the instructions. Walking is recommended as you are able as it helps your circulation and prevents complications, just don’t overdo it.

Immediately after surgery and during the healing phase, you will see a visible scar. However, over time and with proper care, the appearance of the scar will be minimized.

On the day of your breast augmentation surgery, you will arrive at the hospital or surgical facility at a pre-determined time. You will meet the anesthesiologist who will discuss your overall health and if there have been any previous experiences with anesthesia. Then, a nurse will go over post-treatment care with you and your designated caregiver. You will be taken to the operating room and after anesthesia has been administered, the surgery will begin. Your surgical treatment will take between 1-1.5 hours.

Most of the time, having breast implants will not affect your ability to breastfeed since the surgery doesn’t affect the milk ducts. However, depending on the depth of the incision and its location, at times, it may interfere with breastfeeding. Keeping the areola (nipple) intact during surgery will cause fewer breastfeeding issues.

The decision to have a breast augmentation surgery is very personal. Therefore, it is worth having if the outcome of the surgery will make you feel more confident and secure in your own body.

As in any surgery, there will always be risks. However, breast augmentation surgery is very common and safe. It is important to ensure your surgeon is board-certified and experienced to ensure the best outcome.
