“Brotox” 101 a.k.a. Botox for Men [The Ultimate Guide]

“Bro-tox” aka BOTOX® for men has become an increasingly popular aesthetic treatment. As women are looking more youthful; men are eager to achieve the same effect!

Brotox is a safe, medically-approved injectable form of a neuromodulator (neurotoxin) that “freezes” muscles which are used repetitively in facial gestures and movements. (The neurotoxin effectively paralyzes the muscles.) It’s the repeated use of the muscles over time that produces the fine lines and wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes (crow’s feet).

A little-known fact is that while BOTOX® is an incredibly popular cosmetic treatment, it has been widely used by medical professionals to treat other medical conditions including:

  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Chronic migraines
  • Overactive bladders
  • Uncontrollable blinking
  • Misaligned eyes

Why is Botox® so popular?

BOTOX® has become increasingly popular over time because of the simplicity and effectiveness of the treatment. BOTOX® doesn’t just decrease the appearance of wrinkles; it also boosts self-confidence which is an advantage at any age. This can have a positive impact on social lives and careers.

Additionally, because there is minimal downtime after treatment and the treatments are performed quite quickly, you don’t have to take much time off from work – maybe an hour or so, at the most.

Men & Brotox…

Not surprisingly, men are becoming mainstream BOTOX® clients. More than half a million men in the US, alone, get BOTOX® injections each year! Just like their female counterparts, males are happy to turn back the hands of time and embrace anti-ageing therapies.

Not surprisingly, several famous male celebrities like Simon Cowell and Deion Sanders have used or use BOTOX® to enhance their appearance.

Botulinum injections in men target various areas:

  • forehead to make creases less visible
  • lines between the eyebrows (glabella) to make the lines less dominant (glabella)
  • crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes
  • laugh lines around the mouth

One important thing to note is that the muscle tissue in men tends to be a little thicker than in women. As a result, men may require more units of BOTOX® (the measured amount of neuromodulator that is used) to achieve their desired results.

The number of units of BOTOX® that is injected will vary slightly from person to person with some requiring more and others requiring less.

What’s the ideal age for men to start BOTOX®?

To be honest, there’s really no “right” or ideal age to begin BOTOX®, except that you should be at least 18 years of age. The factors that will determine the right age that you should begin having neuromodulator injections include your cosmetic or other life goals as well as your treatment needs. The decision is very much self-driven.

How does BOTOX® help?

Neuromodulators like BOTOX® are injected into the muscles which produce the fine lines, wrinkles, and creases in the facial areas of concern. The botulinum toxin “freezes” or paralyzes the muscles in the region so they are unable to produce the facial gestures or actions.

As a result, the creases, wrinkles, and fine lines begin to soften and become less prominent. Over time and with repeated injections at 3–4-month intervals, they will begin to appear smoother and less noticeable while new wrinkles are prevented from forming too. With repeated uses and the softening of wrinkles and lines over time, there are fewer injection and potentially longer intervals between treatments in the long run. Good news, right?

Easy as 1-2-3 …

The best part of this simple and effective cosmetic anti-ageing treatment is that BOTOX® treatment is minimally invasive and can be performed in a relaxed clinical setting without any form of anesthesia in just about 30 minutes.

Immediately after treatment, you could experience some slight swelling, bruising or tenderness around the injection site(s) but these are temporary effects and will rectify on their own.

You’ll also find that within 48 hours or so, the lines and wrinkles in the treated area will begin to soften and look less noticeable, but the full effect will be seen in approximately 14 days. You may also notice some softening effects in the muscles of the adjacent areas.

If you’re 18 years of age or older and in good health, this type of treatment is suitable for you. (Anyone who has a neuromuscular disease, or an egg allergy is not a good candidate for BOTOX®.)

How to choose your doctor or nurse injector?

There’s an abundance of clinics that offer BOTOX® injections, but no two clinics are the same. It’s important to ensure that your injector is qualified, well-trained and has experience and expertise. There is never any harm in asking to see photographs (i.e., before and after) of their work so you can see some of the results they’ve achieved.

Your choice of injector will be greatly influenced by their demeanour, your comfort level with them as well as the rapport you’re able to establish. You should be able to speak freely about your cosmetic goals and ask questions or discuss any concerns you may have with them.
