Did you know that ancient civilizations like the Egyptians were already experimenting with lip augmentation techniques using natural substances? Fast-forward a few millennia, and here we find ourselves in a world where plump, luscious lips are just a syringe away and they are called lip fillers.

Ever found yourself longing for fuller, smoother lips? If so, lip augmentation might’ve crossed your mind. While there are surgical options, many people are turning to lip fillers – a popular, less invasive method with a faster bounce-back time. During this procedure, a selected filler is gently injected into the lips to give them the desired shape.

As the years roll by, your skin tends to lose collagen and fat, causing it to thin out and lose its youthful plumpness, lips included. Lip fillers step in to replenish what time takes away, restoring that desired fullness. In this blog, youโ€™ll explore more about lip fillers, from the procedure, and types, to their longevity, so letโ€™s hop into it.

Types of Lip Fillers: Making the Right Choice

In the world of aesthetic medicine, lip augmentation has seen a surge in popularity, and with it, an overload of filler options. Here we have unpacked the main types along with their benefits and setbacks so that you can make an informed choice.

Type of Lip Filler What are they? Benefits Drawbacks
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers These are generally derived from a substance that’s naturally found in our bodies, these fillers are known for their gel-like consistency.  (e.g., Juvederm, Restylane)  They offer a smooth, natural look and the volume can be easily controlled during injection. Also, If you’re unhappy with the results, some enzymes can dissolve the filler quickly.

They are not permanent and last between 6 to 12 months. Also has the Potential for mild swelling or bruising post-procedure.

Collagen Based Fillers These were once the go-to for lip fillers, these are derived from purified animal or human collagen. As they are based on a natural substance, they can offer a soft, realistic look. Shorter lifespan than hyaluronic acid fillers, often lasting 3 to 4 months, and potential for allergic reactions, especially if extracted from animal sources.
Permanent and Semi-Permanent Fillers

These fillers offer longer-lasting results, with some designed to stay on the lips indefinitely. Longer duration means fewer touch-ups. Can offer significant volume and shape alteration.

As your face naturally ages, the presence of permanent fillers may not adapt well to your changing facial structure leading to visible lumps.

How Long Does a Lip Filler Last?

1. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

These are among the most popular choices for lip augmentation due to their safety profile and natural look.

Juvederm (Ultra, Ultra Plus, and Volbella XC)

Made from hyaluronic acid, Juvederm’s results can differ based on the specific product used. For lips, Juvederm Volbella XC tends to last around 6-12 months. Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus may last a similar duration, though some people find results persist closer to a full year.

Restylane (Restylane-L, Restylane Silk, and Restylane Kysse)

Also a hyaluronic acid-based filler, Restylane products are another popular choice. Restylane Silk and Restylane Kysse are designed specifically for the lips, and typically last 6-9 months.

2. Collagen Fillers

While not as popular as hyaluronic acid fillers due to their shorter lifespan, collagen fillers still have their proponents.

Zyplast and Zyderm

These are bovine-derived collagen fillers. Their results are more short-lived compared to other fillers, generally lasting 3-4 months.

Evolence

Derived from porcine collagen, Evolence was designed to offer a longer-lasting alternative to traditional collagen fillers. However, it still usually lasts for about 6 months.

3. Permanent and Semi-Permanent Fillers

These fillers offer long-lasting results but come with increased risks and considerations.

Artefill (Bellafill)

A permanent filler that combines bovine collagen with PMMA microspheres. Once injected, the collagen is gradually absorbed, leaving the PMMA microspheres to support the skin’s structure. The results are permanent, but touch-ups might be needed.ย

Sculptra

A semi-permanent filler made from poly-L-lactic acid. It’s different from other fillers as it stimulates your skin to produce collagen. While it’s more commonly used for facial volume, when used for lips, Sculptra can last 2 years or more.

Radiesse

Another semi-permanent filler is made of calcium hydroxylapatite. It’s used less frequently for lips compared to other areas of the face due to its thicker consistency. But when used for lips, its effects can last up to a year or longer.

Factors Affecting the Longevity of Lip Fillers

Apart from the average lifespan, other factors also influence the lasting effect of lip fillers.

1. Different Metabolism Rates

Everyone’s body processes and breaks down fillers at different rates. Faster metabolisms may break down fillers more quickly, resulting in shorter-lasting results, while slower metabolisms can extend the filler’s longevity. The body’s response to foreign substances, like fillers, can differ, meaning two people with the same filler might have different lasting effects.

2. Product Type and Brand

Different filler products within the same brand or from different manufacturers can have varying lifespans. It’s best to discuss your desired outcome and expectations with your injector to choose the most suitable product.

3. Injection Technique

The proficiency of the injector plays an important role in determining how long the fillers will last. A skilled injector will know the right depth, quantity, and distribution to get the desired results. Proper placement can also prevent the filler from metabolizing too quickly. This highlights the need to choose an experienced and well-trained practitioner.

4. Lip Activity and Facial Expressions

The lips, being a particularly active part of the face, are subjected to a lot of movement. Activities such as frequent speaking, chewing gum, and smoking can affect the longevity of the filler, as consistent lip movement can cause the product to break down faster.

5. Sun Exposure and Lifestyle

Sun exposure, smoking, and certain lifestyle factors can accelerate the breakdown of fillers. Protecting your skin from UV rays and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help extend its lifespan.

6. Follow-Up Maintenance

Many people opt for touch-up treatments to maintain their desired results. Regularly scheduling these maintenance sessions can extend the duration of your filler so make sure to take your follow-up sessions seriously.

7. Filler Type

As you might know by now, permanent and semi-permanent fillers can last significantly longer than temporary hyaluronic acid fillers but the only drawback is that they come with their own set of risks and considerations.

Tips to Maintain the Longevity of Lip Fillers

Maintaining the longevity of lip fillers involves both pre and post-treatment care. Here are some tips to ensure that your enhanced pout stays plump for as long as possible:

1. Follow Post-Treatment Guidelines

Your practitioner will provide post-treatment advice that you must follow for best results. This often includes avoiding strenuous exercise, extreme temperatures like saunas, and direct sun exposure for the first 24-48 hours post-treatment.

2. Limit Exposure to UV Rays

Sun exposure can degrade fillers more quickly. Use a lip balm with SPF, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and avoid prolonged sun exposure to protect your lips.

3. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water helps maintain the hydration level of the lips, which can, in turn, support the filler’s longevity.

4. Opt for Gentle Massages

A few days after the treatment and with your injector’s approval, gently massaging the lips can help evenly distribute the filler, preventing any lumps and ensuring a smooth result.

Our injector Kylie Jarvis says this, โ€œI personally don’t suggest my clients massage their lips after I perform it post injection, however if they feel any in the first few hours being home, I allow it. But, typically lumps/bumps subside after two weeks and if they don’t, I get clients to return to clinic for a follow-up.โ€

5. Avoid Smoking

Not only is smoking bad for your health, but the repetitive pursing of the lips can also cause fillers to break down more quickly.

6. Limit Alcohol and Salty Foods Immediately After treatment

Alcohol and Salty foods can contribute to dehydration and may increase swelling after the procedure. It’s a good idea to avoid them for a few days post-treatment.

7. Avoid Excessive Lip Movement

Activities that involve excessive lip movements, like playing wind instruments or frequently sipping through straws, may reduce the longevity of the fillers so itโ€™s best to avoid activities that put a strain on your lips.

8. Make sure to get Regular Touch-Ups

Rather than waiting for the filler to dissolve entirely, get your periodic touch-ups so that the desired volume and shape can be retained for longer.

9. Use Quality Lip Care Products

Keep your lips moisturized and healthy. Using lip balms and ointments can help maintain the skin’s integrity and support the filler’s effects.

10. Keep the Stress at Bay

Chronic stress can speed up the aging process, which might influence the longevity of cosmetic treatments, including lip fillers, therefore managing stress in your daily life becomes important.

11. Maintain a Stable Weight

Significant weight fluctuations can affect the facial structure, including the lips, potentially impacting how fillers settle and last, so make sure to maintain a constant weight for the time being.

12. Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications and Supplements

If possible and with the guidance of a healthcare professional, avoid blood thinners before the procedure. These can increase bruising and might influence the settling of the fillers.

Summing Up

In essence, the longevity of lip fillers is influenced by both external factors and individual body responses. If you take proactive measures and are mindful of post-treatment care, you can enhance and prolong the results of your lip augmentation. Itโ€™s always smart to consult with your practitioner for personalized advice that caters to your specific needs.
